Odd Wisconsin: Black lumberjacks worked in the North Woods
The word lumberjack usually conjures up the Paul Bunyan stereotype of a man with a bushy beard and red-checkered shirt, or maybe a jovial French-Canadian or brawny Scandinavian.
But black loggers also roamed the northern Wisconsin woods, and their numbers rose and fell with the fate of lumbering.

The 1880 census showed 219 blacks in Wisconsin logging counties. That number steadily rose during the heyday of lumbering, until by 1910 it had doubled to 432. Still, black lumberjacks were always statistically rare, making up 1.5 percent of the logging work force in 1890.

The only black lumberjack who went down in Wisconsin history was from Shawano County. A Belle Plaine farmer named Peterson found him orphaned during the Civil War "when he was about 3 years old, " according to William Alft of Antigo. "The Negro boy grew to manhood, always living with the Peterson family, and when old enough followed the work in the woods and river. He was a large, powerful man and it was claimed by all who knew him that he had the strength of four ordinary men. Peavey stocks that ordinary men could not break he would take one in each hand, hook them in a log, and break them with one hand. "

As the lumber industry moved west, so did the lumberjacks, and by 1930 the number of blacks in northern Wisconsin had fallen back to pre-logging levels.
