When another adult rides in your car do you insist they wear their seat belt?

GracieMae

You betcha I do.

Yep, my car - my rules. I don't really know for certain (I need to check this out) but couldn't I be held liable if they were injured or killed while riding as a passenger in my vehicle? Either way, I would have to live with the guilt of someone dying while I was driving, that isn't something I want to deal with. While it could still happen while they were buckled up, at least I would know that I had done everything possible to protect them.

I'm not sure you could be help liable Robyn but I agree with everything you said.

Yup I do... and I say "I really don't want your body flopping on top of me should we get into an accident." :D

Everyone I know wears their seatbelt anyway so I haven't had to insist, but I would if I needed to.

I don't quite insist, I just tell them that, given my driving, I think it's a good idea. They get the point. (And sometimes turn a little pale, but that's just a side benefit.)

I agree, and I was told by someone this past weekend to buckle up cause I forgot

not used to riding on the passenger side I guess

Nope. I just tell them that the doors in my car are prone to come flying open on tight corners....

yes i dont wanna be responsible for their injury or death if i get in an accident and theyre thrown from the car. Plus i dont want them flying and hitting someone else in the car (and me) in the case of an accident.

Yes, absolutely. It is the law here in KY, and I'm not getting a ticket for anything that I can help.

yep, if they don't want to, I just tell them they can pay for the ticket i will recieve if they don't.

nope, only because the only time it happened, my 8yo was 3 and he told her in a very loud voice that she needed to put it on. She turned to me to protest and I just smiled at her. She was a very large lady and was most uncomfortable.

I have however refused to drive with the same someone with me and my kids in their car unless they are buckled. That went down well...

Only if they sit behind me, other than that, it's their face.

absolutely! I dont want to be charged for my passengers not choosing to follow the law.....here, as the driver, you are charged A$255 and lose 3 demerit points, if you (or your passengers) dont legally buckle up. If you have a child in your car, and they arent using the correct restraint (capsule/booster/harness etc) for their age/weight, you can also be charged.

Yes, because it is the law.

I do make sure everyone is wearing their seatbelt. When my kids were smaller sometimes their friends would try to put the shoulder harness behind them. I always insisted they wear it correctly. I was told several times that their parents allowed them to wear the shoulder harness behind them. Sorry, my car and you will wear it correctly!

Car doesn't move, or at leave the driveway, until everyone is buckled.

Never needed the law to tell me that either.

Children are required to buckle up.
Adults are responsible for their actions, so if *I* receive a ticket for their non-use of seat belts, they will be paying the associated fines/costs.

I understand the point behind seat belt laws. I disagree with them, frankly, but I do see the point. And to some degree, I think that they work. (Although an annoying car works even better). When we moved to Michigan, I would wear my seat belt when I thought about it. Now, I wear it the majority of the time. What had a bigger impact on my wearing it though, is that the Pacifica has this annoying "Feature" that it will continue to alarm every 5 seconds or so until the seat belt is on.

Again, I see the point, but am highly annoyed by the means. (rendering it effective).

Yes. It is the law here. No belt, no ride.

Well I had this very converszation this morning with the Enfield fire department. I have to go get my childrens car seats ajusted. One because my son is getting to big to put the straps put over. And my daughters have to be made to fit over her because of her brace. I just learned the new law here , is you can't put a child in a booster seat until he is 60 lbs and /or six years old. That just came into affect the third of Oct. I wear mine. But sometimes I cheat and I don't. Sometimes I just forget.

I've got one simple rule in any vehicle I'm operating... the key doesn't go into the ignition until ALL passengers are belted. No particular reason for this, just anal that way I suppose :P

All of you who indicate that the car doesn't leave without seatbelts in place, is it reasonable to assume that there is no variation in your compliance with all traffic laws?

Personally, I'm a consistently speeding scofflaw ;)

There are people who don't wear their seatbelt?

If someone is too stupid to not put their seatbelt on, I woudl let them. If they die, I'll chalk it up to nature weeding out weak genes.

You ride in my car, you wear a seatbeat. It is the law and common sense. We have been in too many situations in which, if we had not been wearing seatbelts, we would have been seriously injured.

I just had the car seats for the kids adjusted at local fire department. The cheif said if you can rock the car , by the car seat then the carseat is tightly in the belt. If you can't then somethings wrong.

Something wrong like, perhaps one's vehicle shocks or struts need replacing? ;)

I always wear a seatbelt and all my passengers do also. I have never really had to argue with anyone about it. In fact, my dogs have seatbelts as well and wear them when they are not traveling in their crates in the back. :D

I love you for buckling up your dogs! That is a huge pet peeve of mine... especially dogs that ride in the back of pick ups (along with people - but that is rare these days with the laws).

I have a clean driving record. :D No accidents, no tickets, no nothing. The only time I speed is when I go through the tunnel on I-540 and then I don't even realize it until I'm out of the tunnel because it freaks me out so bad. Sometimes I speed to get around large semi trucks because I hate being beside them too. But 99.9% of the time I follow all laws accordingly.

I admit that Im a self-confessed lead-foot....I cant help it, racings in my blood! lol (ok, yeah, I can help it...but I 'forget' sometimes....lol) But its usually when Im on my own, 'something' reminds me, when I have others in the car, to slow down. I still fiercely stick by the 'all seatbelts on before I move' rule....altho Ive never had to say anything to any passenger Ive ever had....I think its always been instilled in us to belt up, so its just natural to do it...

NO! It means your childs car seat is to loose. If you live in the U.S. go to your local fire department for them to check.
