It was said in a non debate forum that going to the movies alone is pathetic. I honestly want to know why that would be considered pathetic. I'm not offended since I have done it, and would do it again in a hot second if I had the chance, but I just don't see where the "pathetic" part comes in.

Please enlighten me :)

I've never done it, but I would if the oppurtunity arose! My dh thinks I'm nuts. He's of the "pathetic" crowd. I guess some see it as a social thing, and others see it as just a movie!

I have done it (granted only once) and would most certainly do it again! There is nothing pathetic about a big screen, mega surround sound, not having to share the popcorn and NO INTERRUPTIONS! :)

But Michele.....

who would assure you that the lights were dimming, and that you weren't fainting? :howling:

I think it is great. I don't know why anyone would find it pathetic.

Certainly have done it, and loved it. Action movies, comedies are particularly social films for me. Something more thought-provoking I like seeing on my own, though I have no objection to seeing them with friends. Haven't done it for a while, partly because I'm less likely to get the impetus to go to the movies on my own, partly because my friends share broadly the same tastes in movies, and partly an issue of money and time.

Since when is a movie a social activity? I can't think of anything more appropriate to do alone, any activity that is enhanced by silence, and is done in the dark is a pretty good solo activity in my book. :)

When I was single I used to do "movie marathons" on Saturdays, I would get up, clean, and go to like three or four movies, it was a great way to spend the day when I didn't want to be forced to socialize.

I haven't done one in awhile, because there are things I would rather do with my "alone" time, but DH gets the day every Saturday (while I take Jake) to do what he wants, and he often catches a movie.

After spending most of my life single, and/or traveling alone on business, there are very few activities that I won't do by myself. If I want to do something being alone isn't going to stop me.

Hardest things to do alone:

1- Amusement parks (although Epcot is o.k., most are not good solo activities).
2- Dining alone at a nice sit down restaurant- casual restaurants, I could always bring a book but that felt inappropriate at a really nice restaurant, so that was always awkward. But hey, if they had great food, I can handle awkward. :)

I've done it. I'd do it again. I don't have to share my goobers this way :D

Who is the Jackass that said that? Well, I guess I am pathetic, because I regularly go to the movies ALONE and I also go out to eat at sit down restaraunts ALONE.

What is pathetic is being so self conscious or self centered that you are afraid to do anything by yourself. Seriously, I do all kinds of things alone. I cherish my alone time as much as I cherish my social time.

Just thought I would stir the pot a little :)

I LOVE doing things alone. I even go out to dinner alone. Sometimes I just don't feel very social and I want to get out and just be alone doing something I enjoy doing

I would love to go to the movies by myself. There's nothing pathetic about that.

I go to the movies alone. After all, Greta Garbo "vanted to be alone."

Those who feel that going to the movies alone are of the same kind that can't take a pee alone...have to bring someone to the rest room!

My dh often goes to the movies alone as there are many movies I am not interested in seeing. He really likes this time for himself!

I would love to go to the movies alone. In fact dh has promised me a day at the spa when(if??:howling: )he gets home from Florida and I may just take in a movie BY MYSELF as well.

Nothing pathetic about it at all.

Well, the one person who chose to use that word hasn't bothered to explain to me why it's considered "pathetic"

Oh well, must not have been too convinced of that view {{{SHRUG}}}

:paranoid: Didja pay for em all? :paranoid:

LOL, as kids, my older brother and I would go to the movies and pay for the first one, and then just bop around the screens and watch everything playing! (that we were allowed to watch).

I don't think it's pathetic to go to a movie alone. Sometimes, it's better to do so because going with other people can be distracting, especially if someone wants to talk through the entire movie.

Yeah, I did that as a kid myself, but figured I had enough bad karma from that, so I paid, I actually just bought the ticket for all the shows I wanted to see up front. They always laughed when I said:

"I will have a ticket for the 12:30, 3:30, and 5:30 showings of X, Y, and Z." :)
