SFAS (Conversation from another site):
We are constantly bombarded with pleas to send money to Africa. Help fight AIDS, famine, poverty, etc. Why should we help these people if they won't stop breeding? It is common knowledge that babies are raped every day because culture/folklore says it will cure AIDS if you have sex with a baby. So these innocent babies are raped by grown men and cut from their rectum to their vagina and infected with AIDS and left to die. Babies are born into poverty only to die later from AIDS (most likely.)
Why should we send money to people that won't listen? Why should we help those that won't help themselves? Isn't our money being wasted? Shouldn't we just let them keep essentially breeding into poverty and thus dwindling their existence away?

Do you think your money is wasted? US just cut 34 million dollars to fund UN Population Fund. That would have helped prevent 2 million unwanted pregnancies and nearly 800,000 abortions, 4,700 mothers' deaths in childbirth and more than 77,000 infant and child deaths. This is the third consecutive year the money has been withheld. The US says there is a direct link between the UN fund's work and the Chinese practice of forced abortion - an allegation the UN denies.
So it is happening all the time in the goverment level, even if we want it or not...

Sounds like we need to spend our money on educating them, as well as helping them.

Exactly what Mabs said. How sad to read the OP. :( I wish I *could* do more.

That is exactly the point. We are spending millions of our own dollars to educate them and they aren't listening. So do we keep sending them money and helping them? Or do we let them deal with personal responsibility?

Why is it our responsibility? I am asking in all sincerity, do other countries send us money to handle domestic issues?
Whether or not they do change, I would feel obliged to send money to help those infants who are being abused. It is not their fault that some f-ed up adults are being abusive towards them. And even if we can't stop it those children, who did nothing wrong, might need help later on, if they contracted AIDS or simply were suffering from the abuse.
They are the ones that I feel for, and I do believe any child in need of charitable help should get it.

This is my feeling as well. I do realize that it may not help, but I would feel obligated to try.

You're right - it's a culture thing. The things are happening because the culture dictates it. Polygamy is normal and accepted in many African cultures. This, by it's nature, continues the spread of AIDS. It gets passed on to the children who, really, have no chance of survival.
The education needs to come from the leadership of the country. When presidents are denying the existence of HIV, how can we expect the people to learn?
