For example, would you ever go to a very conservative Christian message board and pretend to be that way to play devil's advocate and perhaps stir some controversy? Or would you go to a CF board and come off as a rabid CF'er to stir the pot?

No, I would find it hard for me to do, especially if I felt strongly about something ya know?
Now I can understand if you don't care one way or the other and let everyone know ahead of time that is what you are doing.

Nope I am always me, it just the ideas expressed in a debate that may not be my personal convictions, I don't pretend to "be" someone else.
There is no rule (either written or implied) at any of the sites I frequent that says you have to debate only what you deeply believe 100% of the time.
That rule does exist at many sites, and I wouldn't try to break it.
