OSHAWA, ONT. - An Oshawa-area couple who beat, handcuffed and caged their two adopted sons have been sentenced to nine months in jail.
The couple, who are the boys' uncle and aunt, pleaded guilty in January to charges of assault with a weapon, forcible confinement and failure to provide the necessities of life.
Boys were locked in the cellar
"Both accused share equal responsibility as parents," said Ontario Court Judge Donald Halikowski. "Both failed."
Child welfare investigators rescued the boys, now aged 17 and 18, from their home in rural Blackstock, Ont., three years ago after receiving a tip from a relative.
One boy was found in a cage that was strapped to a wall and padlocked.
At times, the boys were tied to their beds and handcuffed. They were often beaten – sometimes with a broom handle.
The boys had to eat their own feces out of fear of being punished. They also drank their own urine because they were deprived of water.
