Why is Tiger woods Black? But no one mentions he is Asian?
Why is Halle Barry Black? But no one mentions that she is also equally White?
When Halle Barry won the first oscar for a Black woman. Did they also count it as the 50th for a white woman?
Why is it that if we are ANYTHING but white, that is what we are?
When will our country get so "melted" that we will finally not care about race, but about the humans.

It is my humble oppinion that we will stop careing about race when people stop trying to define themselves by their race. When individuals wrap themselves up in the trappings of their individual race or culture they are setting themselves apart from mainstream America. Instead of trying to blend together they want to stand out and be diferent. Unfortunately when someone makes a effort to stand out and be different they are going to be treated different.

2nd best post ever. I totally agree.

Great topic KL! I really don't know the answer. I think there is a fine line between retaining the beautiful traditions of one's culture, and realizing that we are members of one race, the human race.
When you get down to it, wasn't Halle Berry raised by her (white) mother? So really, she is literally being defined as a person by the color of her skin, not her culture. Even more of a shame.

I agree! I don't think one should let one's race define who they are - but should let it be a special part of them, kwim? We ALL are different, and we should embrace those differences in each other - not clump all the people with the SAME differences together....

Slightly off subject, but this statement is inaccurate...
When Halle Barry won the first oscar for a Black woman.
Actually, it's Hattie McDaniel who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Gone With The Wind". Halle Barry was the first to win Best Actress....

I love what Denzel said when asked how he wanted the headline to read, "Black man wins Oscar" or "African American wins Oscar" his reply was something like "Why don't you just say that an actor won the Oscar".

Um. Did you count the number of oscars that white women have won? Because I'm sure that that would be innacurate too? Why worry about just one "inaccuracy" and not the other?

Nope. I was just giving credit where credit is due.

Vanilla Ice got fairly far on being a white rap star, actually.
And I have heard plenty about Tiger Woods being half-Thai, don't know what you've been reading.
Meanwhile you'll notice you don't hear nearly as much about the race of boxers or basketball players.
In each case something unusual is news. Unfortunately, Black or Asian people succeeding in golf or acting is still relatively unusual, so it is pointed out. It will stop being news when it becomes commonplace. It isn't, yet.

George,
Good point. Even though it's off point.
I'm not saying they need to shut up about it. I'm saying that Halle Barry is not any more "black" than she is "white". So why ONLY focus on the black? Look at Freddie Prinze Jr., it's not like they mention his hispanic heritage EVERY time that he stars in a movie.

As for what I've been "reading". I've been reading article after article and I actually watch Golf on TV too. So really the question is, what have you been reading and watching? Ever watch the Golf channel? Watch an entire afternoon of Golf?
Hmmmm. Let's see. Just did a google news search for Tiger woods and Thai...
Results 1 - 7 of about 7 for tiger woods thai. (0.05 seconds)
And now we do African American....
Results 1 - 10 of about 121 for tiger woods african-american. (0.07 seconds)
