When I was a child, children could decorate their desks with stickers... one of the girls had a very large sticker on her desk - it showed a dove flying - on the dove it said "Which way are you going?" and then there were two paths in front of the dove - one branching upward - a rainbow path to beautiful clouds and sparkles and such "To Heaven?" and the other path branching downward, red flames going to a black hole "or to Hell?"
Assuming children are still allowed to personalize their desks, should they be able to put such a thing on their desk today?

Only if the child next to them were able to put a Pentagram on their desk with absolutely no fuss made about it.
Dude when *I* was in school we would have gotten into mega trouble for "decorating" our desks. We weren't even allowed to write on them in pencil (that came off). How did the get this decoration off at the end of the year?

Yes. Freedom of speech.

Yes, as long as the other children are free to decorate their desks with things that reflect their beliefs as well.

What if a child is being taught "hate" at home. And they decorate their desk with a white dove flying into the beautifull clouds and a black dove diving into the dark fire. Is this freedon of expression?
Times have changed.........Second grade, St Louise Catholic school. Sister Mary Lorraine grabbed my arm and hauled me to the front of the class and slapped me across the face. I had written my name on my desk in pencil.

Yes. Still freedom of expression.

In this case, sure, pretty innocuous. Even in most specific cases I would actually agree with King, freedom of expression ... but for the general case, it's a tougher call. Specifically I'm thinking: what if all the kids but yours display signs hostile to your kid? Wouldn't that get in the way of your kid enjoying school, or learning there?
