First of all this is not a dig at Christians in anyway. Why do some Christians feel it absolutely necessary to quote from the bible to prove a point? I've noticed it doesn't only apply to conversations about religion either. I once overheard two ladies in the doctors office talking about soap and then one of them quoted from a biblical passage. I'm very passionate about my faith but I use my own ideas to prove any points I need to make.

As a non-believer, I and many others, sometimes quote verses from the bible as cliché as we do Shakespeare, sometimes without being conscious of it, and sometimes as expletive - 'Jesus wept' can be quite effective in expressing despair, for instance.

as another non-believer, quotes from whatever sources are a means of expressing an idea or point in a manner that (in the speaker's opinion) better conveys their position.
The only thing that some of the bible quoters need to remember is that bible quotes do not PROVE anything beyond that someone wrote those particular words in the (whatever translation) of the bible... just like quoting Shakspeare doesn't PROVE the existance of Puck.

We quote it because it is the basis for our beliefs.

I believe FaeryGem is a Brit, and the reason why Brits often quote scripture is as I said above. Dot Cotton is a very rare bird.

WS, Im not sayng quoting from the bible is a bad thing. Why quote from it when the conversation has nothing to do with religion at all? I mean these 2 little old ladies we're talking about different brands of soap and then all of a sudden one comes out with a passage from the bible. It was a giggle really.

to many, one doesnt seperate "religion" and everything else... they are so intertwined. They speak of what they know...

There are too many contradictions in the bible to use it like a law book.
The Bible says "thou shall not kill" yet Moses caused the death of thousands of people in God's name. If you believe that God carved on a rock, thou shall not kill, then you should not make exceptions to suit your needs, wants, or opinion.
And Christians can quote bible versus in support of discernment but supposedly, Jesus himself said, Do not judge.

The commandment your refering to actually is saying thou shalt not murder. If you check the original language you'll see that. There are justifiable reasons to kill according to Gods Laws, in spite of what today's pascifists say.
And regarding Jesus saying not to judge, we are to judge right and wrong, sin and what is moral in life. How else can we determine right from wrong if we don't make some judgements in these area's.
Also, if you look at the english word to Judge in the original language, it say's condemn. We aren't to condemn each other lest we be condemned by the Lord. To judge the actions of another in order to determine if their right or wrong isn't even just a Spiritual Law, it's common sense, other wise even more chaos than we currently have within humanity would take place.

Okay, I checked the King James Version and found it said, "thou shall not kill" Here is a link (http://bible.gospelcom.net/passage/?search=Exodus%2020%20;&version=9;)
So I dug up the original text
original word : xcr which is transliterated to Ratsach
which means :
to murder, slay, kill
(Qal) to murder, slay
premeditated
accidental
as avenger
slayer (intentional) (participle)
Here is a Hebrew lexicom (http://www.studylight.org/lex/heb/view.cgi?number=07523)
I checked, and most modern translations of the Bible change the passage to
"thou shall not murder."

Okay, same exercise
Here is the King James (http://bible.gospelcom.net/passage/?search=Matthew%207%20;&version=9;)
