Do we have any Muslims here???

There are areas of the world under "Islamic Rule" that are oppressive to women.
The American Muslims that I have encountered (mostly on-line) say that Islam is NOT oppressive to women and that these countries are mis-interpretting the Koran.

According to Islamic doctrine...what is the status or role of women? Does this correlate with the way Muslim women are actually treated within their faith? In the US? Outside of the US?

I know there are different doctrins within Islam (much like different denominations of Christianity here) that have their own 'guidelines'. Saudi Arabia is under one of the most strict interpretations as it pertains to women (Sharion or something like that). It is also the interpretation that the new leaders of Iraq are proposing, which is sad. Women had way more freedom under Saddam than under this doctrin.
