T.C.A. 49-6–3009 – Penalty for Violations - (a) Any parent, guardian or other person who has control of a child, or children, and who violates the provisions of this part commits a Class C misdemeanor.

(b) Each day's unlawful absence constitutes a separate offense.

T.C.A. 40-35–111 – Terms of Imprisonment or Fines - (3) Class C misdemeanor, not greater than thirty (30) days or a fine not to exceed fifty dollars ($50.00), or both, unless otherwise provided by statute.

Do you agree with this ?

I do for young children . But I can remember how easy it was to cut class as a teen . My parents had no idea I was cutting class . They saw me get on the bus and assumed I stayed at school all day but got a ride home from a friend .

No I DONT agree with it. I was a victim of this stupid law. Fined, had to go to court etc. I was not the one skipping school, my daughter was ! SHE should have had to go in front of juvenile court, pay the fines or serve community service and answer to a judge, not me.

Yes yes, she's a minor and in my care and is my child. However, all that taught her was that SHE did not have to take responsibility for her actions, I did ! It should be re-written that if the child is skipping school, the CHILD is the one that answers for it.

It is extremely easy to cut class. The schools here only notify you if your child is gone the whole day. If they go to 1st and 2nd period, the rest of the day is unaccounted for.

I agree w/ RA!

This should punish the child.. not the parent. And this is coming from someone that skipped school constantly. My mother didn't know I wasn't there. I got on the bus, went to school and then school friends and I would take off in theirs or someone elses car.

No big deal.

What a horrible law. Yes I think it's a parents responsibility to send there children off to school, but to be fined if your child makes a "choice" to cut after he/she already gets there? How is that the parents fault? Unbelievable!
