Homemade Cake Sickens Students

Two middle school students were charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault with intent to commit murder after serving a cake to 12 other students at East Cobb Middle School, police said.

The cornbread-type cake baked by the two 13-year-olds resulted in 11 students being transported by ambulance to the hospital for treatment Tuesday after they began vomiting .

The sickened students were released from the hospital and are expected to be okay.

During a hearing at Cobb Juvenile Court Wednesday, a Cobb County detective testified one of the 13-year-olds passed the cake around and after the kids ate it, claimed it contained bleach, the ingredient on which the more serious charges are based.

The girls said the cake contained some crayons, glue and some clay but denied there was any bleach in it.

Tests at a private lab showed the icing in the cake contained an expired prescription narcotic, bleach, clay and tabasco sauce, the Associated Press reported.

The state crime lab is conducting tests on the cake for its contents.

The father of one that 13-year-old told 11Alive News he believed that there wasn’t any bleach in the cake.

He said his daughter suffered from Asperger Syndrome, a neurological disorder which impaired her ability to communicate and which may have led to her making the claims about the cake.

“It is the inability to make a judgment about what to say that may be inappropriate, but that is not intent to be a terrorist,” he said. “My daughter is very concerned about the other kids. Some of them were people that were her friends that she knew and this is very upsetting for her.”

Cobb County Schools spokesman Jay Dillon said the teen suspects will be suspended and possibly expelled after law enforcement completes its investigation. They were not at the school Wednesday.

“It appears to be something they just made at home and brought to school to share with classmates," said Dillon.

County authorities say the teens brought the cake to East Cobb Middle School, located at 350 Holt Road in Marietta, Ga., and served it up in the cafeteria about noon on Tuesday.

"They took it into the cafeteria at lunch time and began passing it out to students, just whoever would take a piece,” Dillon said. “Several students ate it. Eleven students were transported to the hospital.”

The girls -– whose names are not being released because they are juveniles -– are being held at the Cobb County Juvenile Detention Center, police said.

One 13-year-old is charged with 12 counts of aggravated assault with the intent to commit murder, one county of terroristic acts and one count of interference with government property.

The second teen is charged with 12 counts of aggravated assault with the intent to commit murder, police said.

Another hearing in the case will be scheduled in the next 48 hours.

I know many kids bring cupcakes to school for their birthday and many other activities. Should they be allowed to bring food from home to pass around? Or is it too dangerous? Do you allow your kids to eat food brought from others students homes while at school?

The school that dd goes to is very rough, so no, I do not want her eating homade foods. I have seen how some of these people live, and they are not the cleanliest people by a long shot. Sorry if that sounds snobbish, but that's the fact jack.

I think the kids who pulled that little stunt should have the crap scared out of them and they should receive a very very severe punishment. I think some time in a juvenile facility might be a wake up call that someone could have died.

That being said, I would probably not be suspicious of a snack my DD's friend brought to school. Taking food from strangers or passing acquaintances? No, for the reasons Jory mentioned.

That is an incredibly sad story, and just shows what this world is coming to :(

That said, if it were a treat being passed at my school (private school that I teach at), then I would have zero suspicion and wouldn't care if my child ate it. Normally I'd say that for public school as well, but now I see how truly yucky this world is becoming :( At this point, I guess I'd be suspicious, and not have Tristan eat homebaked goodies brought from a stranger's home.

Our school no longer allows home baked items to be served at school. We've never had a problem with it though. It's just a liability issue that the district didn't want to deal with.

It doesn't seem like the parents have much choice when the kids are at school. They just brought it in a served it.
